What Happens During a Tattoo Consultation?
Know what to bring, what to discuss, and what questions to ask before your tattoo appointment.

A tattoo consultation is where an idea becomes a workable tattoo concept. Start by explaining what the tattoo means to you, where you want it, approximately how large you imagine it, and what visual references you like. Bring a small selection of useful references rather than dozens of unrelated images. Your artist may ask about your preferred style, previous tattoos, placement, schedule, and expectations for the final piece. This is also the right time to discuss estimated session length, pricing structure, deposits, preparation, and aftercare. Be open to professional feedback about size and placement. A design that looks perfect on a screen may need adjustments to work with the shape and movement of your body. The goal of a consultation is not to rush into a final drawing; it is to make sure the client and artist share the same creative direction before the appointment.
